Stranger Danger Announcement
07/06/2018
14:05

To all Parents:

We have become aware of an email circulating in this area regarding an incident involving a student from Como Secondary being approached by a man offering lollies.  The principal let the schools surrounding Como Secondary know of this situation, so some of you might have heard about this.  I have asked the teachers to have a conversation with their classes about “stranger danger” in general and how to deal with it if someone approaches them.  However, we will not be discussing the specifics of the Como case as we do not want to make students fearful of white cars or greying men etc.  We encourage you to discuss these sorts of situations with your child and perhaps role-play appropriate responses.

This is an example of the emails that have been circulated:

“Dear parents,

“The principal of Como Secondary College, Digby Mercer, alerted the school today with respect to a suspicious man who attempted to have a student get into his car this morning on Jackson Road, on the southern boundary of the Collier Park Golf Course.

“The man offered the student sweets and was very persistent.  He is described as Caucasian, in his late 40’s or 50’s and his hair was turning grey.  He was in a white Toyota Corolla and was wearing a dark, tatty jumper.

“The police have requested that if he approaches a student that the student is to firmly say no, take the registration number if the child is able, and then contact the Police on 000”.

Thanks

Bronwyn Jones

Principal

Support following the Margaret River tragedy
14/05/2018
15:00

Our thoughts go out to the family, friends and members of the Margaret River community and beyond affected by the suspected murder–suicide that occurred last week.
School psychologists and other regional staff are supporting students, parents/caregivers and staff in schools in the broader Margaret River area.
Students, parents/caregivers and staff will be aware of this incident through the extensive media coverage over the weekend. Members of our school community may feel sadness, grief and disbelief this week. For some, this event will be more profound, especially for those who have experienced or can relate to issues of family violence and stress, grief, abuse or other traumatic life events.

The Australian Psychological Society website has an information sheet called “Tips for talking with and helping children and young people after tragic events” to help parents/caregivers and school staff talk with children about a tragic event. This has been attached here or you can visit the website, https://www.psychology.org.au/getmedia/a61fcf9d-dc4c-40f3-b94d-65995c85995b/Helping-children-affected-tragic-events.pdf
