Early Close for Parent-Teacher interviews & Picktime booking
27/07/2020
11:40

As you will be aware, we have rescheduled our early close (originally scheduled for Term 1) to run parent-teacher meetings in Week 2 of Term 3 (Wednesday 29th July).  In order to facilitate booking these meetings, we are using Picktime, which is an online booking system.  Please click on the link to go to the booking system https://www.picktime.com/KPSparentinterviews

Reminder – the school will close early on that Wednesday.  Classes will cease at noon but, for those who can’t arrange for their child(ren) to be collected and supervised, there will be some supervision on site.  Children who use the traffic wardens to cross roads will not be able to use these until 3pm.

Attached is the Faction Cross Country program.

Please note that parents may attend but are requested to follow all directions regarding viewing areas and abide by social distancing requirements. Given that we are still in Phase 4, we ask that you do not mix with the students.  Medallions and ribbons will be presented after each event.

Details will also be included in the next newsletter on Wednesday 29 July 2020.

Clarification of Phase 4
20/07/2020
17:25

Just to clarify - the 2 square metre rule still applies so we don't want parents congregating around our verandahs, which is why we are continuing the regular pick-ups and drop-offs to provide a simple location to meet/deliver children.  As you are aware, we are trialling the continuation of the drop-offs at the gate in the morning for the whole of Term 3.  However, as physical distancing is still in force we can't have a large number of adults on the verandahs yet.  So, you may enter the grounds but keep clear of the classrooms.  We are re-starting school banking and you may wish to use the grounds after school.  We just ask that you do not disturb the staff and you maintain the required physical and social distancing.

Phase 4 continues - Phase 5 delayed
20/07/2020
12:35

As you are probably aware, the WA government have delayed the start of Phase 5.  Therefore, we must continue the processes that were put in place last term for Phase 4.  This means the drop off and pick up procedures remain the same (all done at the gates).  We will still continue the Parent-teacher interviews set up for next week.

Student Semester Reports
30/06/2020
16:10

You should have received your child’s semester report via email today.  This semester is different to the usual semester report because of COVID-19.  There are no grades this semester but there are assessments of attitudes, behaviour and effort along with comments on student achievement in English and Maths and an overall comment.  This means the Overall Learning Area achievement section of the report will be unshaded. Next semester, we should, assuming no other disaster, be able to report, as usual, with grades to you.  Please remember to save a copy of these reports to your computer as the link will disappear after a month.

National School Satisfaction Survey
29/06/2020
12:05

This is the biennial survey that all schools are required to send to parents.  We also have a staff and student version too (Year 4-6).  We are encouraging all parents to complete this survey and print out the last page for each of their child(ren) and send it in to their child(ren)’s teachers as proof.  All students whose parents return this survey page will be offered the choice of a hot chocolate or icy pole as a reward.  The class with proportionally the most returns will also be given a reward. All return pages will also be put in a draw for a special family prize.  We thank Mr Simon Keen (School Board member) for donating a family ticket to a jazz concert as the prize for the raffle.

The survey is made up of state or federal required sections (Sections 1-3) as well as some school generated sections (Sections 4-6).  We have included questions requesting feedback about the COVID-19 situation at the school as well as your thoughts on our programs.  As we will shortly begin planning for our next Business Plan (2021-2023) this information will be invaluable.  We have already run a student voice forum for representatives from each of our classes in Years 1-6.  This has been very useful and will be presented, along with the results of this survey, to our School Board next term.

To complete the survey please click on the link below before Friday 31st July .

How to Book a Meeting with your Child's Teacher
29/06/2020
15:00

These meetings will provide an opportunity for you to discuss your child’s report with your child’s teacher and to plan for learning in Semester 2.   We will be using an online booking system called Picktime. Click this link to go to this online booking site - https://www.picktime.com/KPSparentinterviews If you cannot make Wednesday 29th July, then you can choose another time via this same system.  Remember though that the meeting slots are only 12 minutes long.

We encourage all parents to collect their child(ren) on that day at noon.  If that is not possible, your child will be supervised until the normal collection time (3pm).  Please also note that traffic attendants will not be available before 3pm so if your child walks home and crosses roads with the assistance of these attendants, then they would be better to stay at school until 3pm when the attendants will be back on duty.

Early Close and Parent-Teacher Interviews – Rescheduled

We have sought, and received, approval from the School Board and the Regional Executive Director to have an early close on Wednesday 29th August (Week 2 or Term 3) to run our usual ‘speed dating’ version of parent-teacher interviews.  We know one of the casualties of COVID-19 has been easy communication with your child’s teacher and that, due to the disruption, our reports do not include grades for subject areas.  These meetings will provide an opportunity for you to discuss your child’s report with your child’s teacher and to plan for learning in Semester 2.  You will receive information on how to book these meetings from your child’s teacher or via the SmartLink early next week. We will be using an online booking system called Picktime. If you cannot make Wednesday 29th July, then you can choose another time via this same system.

Road Safety Concerns
25/06/2020
15:30

We have had several reports of students not taking care when crossing the roads around the school.  This has included students running across the road without looking and doing similar when cycling.  Several community members have reported this to the school.  We have reminded the children via the PA system this week and I will ask the class teachers to discuss this with their students.  I would ask that all parents reinforce this message at home too.  This has been a recent phenomenon and similar incidents have been in the news lately so it is a topical discussion point.  Thank you.

Phase 4 Arrangements - No changes yet
25/06/2020
15:00

As the 2 square metres physical distancing for adults still remains, we will maintain our current procedures for the final week of Term 2.  In the next newsletter, we will outline our procedures for Phase 5, which is planned to begin at the start of next term and will see the removal of the 2 square metre physical distancing rule for adults. Thank you for your patience.

Children on Our Rooftops on the Weekend
08/06/2020
15:30

It has come to my attention that school age children have been climbing onto the senior block roof.  Obviously this is a very dangerous situation where both children and school property could get hurt.  As this is not occurring during school time, it is not a behaviour management issue for us but rather one with which the police must deal.  Please be aware that we will be calling for extra surveillance of the school grounds on the weekend by police and the Education Security team.

WA roadmap for easing COVID-19 restrictions
11/05/2020
15:00

On 10 May 2020, the Premier announced Western Australia’s roadmap for easing COVID-19 restrictions, taking effect as of 18 May 2020. Further advice to schools on the implications for school activities will be provided later this week.  We will then provide you with this information to let you know what will be happening at our school from Week 4 (next week).

For your information, we have approximately 91% of students from P-6 attending school.  Some are away due to non-COVID-19 reasons and only 12 children are learning online and 9 are learning with paper workpackages from P-6 (so less than 6% learning offsite).  It is lovely to see so many children back at school.

Pick up and drop off
22/04/2020
11:35

Many of you are concerned about dropping off your young children at the gate. While we are still in the planning stages (as we await your responses to our survey form so we know how many students will be onsite), we are unable to give you the exact details about how this drop off will occur.  However, I can confirm that we will ensure that all students are safely delivered to the early childhood classrooms by staff if you drop them off at the school (drop off stations to be confirmed). We will put procedures and staffing in place to ensure this can occur.  We also are unable to tell you how pick-ups will occur until we know student numbers too.  The Admin team are meeting tomorrow to go over preliminary planning but these plans will not be finalised until we know the numbers.   This will be a complex issue, given it will impact traffic and staffing.  However, we plan for the usual kiss and wave will still be available. Please keep your eyes on your email, SmartLink and SMS on Tuesday to be informed of the processes for drop off and pick up.

Further clarification regarding the 3 modes of learning choices
08/04/2020
10:30

I wish to take this opportunity to clarify a few things about your choice of the three modes of learning planned for Term 2. Firstly – who can attend onsite? The main priorities are for vulnerable students and those families providing essential services. However, the Department also refers to those parents who need to send their children to school to maintain employment.  So, while you are encouraged to keep your children home, you must do what you need to do to maintain your income while protecting your family, and our community, from unnecessary risk.

Some people also want clarification on how to respond to our survey if you wish to use face-to-face learning for a couple of days a week, but online learning for the rest.  In that case, please respond with ‘face-to-face’ as the students attending our school site will also be using the online learning resources.  I also strongly encourage you to choose one option only as coming part-time doesn’t really reduce the risks regarding COVID-19.  Also, one consistent form of education is best.

Please respond to the form sent out yesterday as soon as possible to help us with planning for Term 2.

Tomorrow we will be erecting barriers and taping off playgrounds.  The children will have access to play equipment that we keep in storerooms and is not publically available, but we will clean these items thoroughly after use.

Update regarding the Movie Night
16/03/2020
16:45

After much consideration, the P&C executive, with the support of the school, have chosen to postpone the movie night on Friday 27 March.

Although we have clear guidelines at this stage that would allow us to still hold the event, we are conscious of the regularly changing advice being provided and thought it prudent to make the call early to minimise the disruption to those who were going to be attending.

We also appreciate that there may be a general reluctance to attend community gatherings at the present, and don’t want the current conditions to detract from the main purpose of the night, being to get as many people there as we can to fundraise for our Year 6s.

We have been overwhelmed by the generosity of both our sponsors, Karen Firth from Bourke and Melinda Devonshire from Statewest Civil who both chose, very quickly, not to withdraw their sponsorship.

All ticket sales shall be refunded via the TryBooking site. We hope to have this completed by the end of the week. Sadly, the online bookings may be refunded minus a small booking fee but we are yet to look into this.

We have already booked an alternate date in early November to hold our much anticipated community movie night. We sincerely hope this will be a shining light at the end of what will no doubt be a long and unusual winter ahead.

Thank you so much for understanding the difficult decision we felt we needed to make. It wasn’t made lightly. There are uncertain times ahead but we feel very confident that if we support our school, follow the guidelines we are given and support our community, it shall only make us stronger.

Harmony Day changes
16/03/2020
15:05

Following directives around COVID-19, Wednesday’s Harmony day will be scaled back. We aim to keep things as normal as possible for students and thus we continue to encourage students to come dressed in national costume or orange. Students will still have the opportunity to share with their peers and be involved in Harmony related activities. However, the assembly will be closed. So we respectfully ask parents to not stay to attend the assembly or participate in the activities. We know this is disappointing for all, but in order to reduce the risks while maintaining the program for the students, we feel this is the best solution under the conditions in which we find ourselves.

Class reps wanted
18/02/2020
11:20

Class reps fill a vital role in our school with communications to parents/carers, ad hoc reminders of classroom activities and assistance with the class fundraising activities. It is a relatively easy task and can be filled by an individual or shared between a couple of people. It is a great way to get to know other parents/carers, make new friends and to get an insight into the P&C and KPS ”behind the scenes”.  This year we would like to call on all parents/carers who have never held the role of class rep before to put your hand up! This helps broaden the pool of people who are actively involved with our school.

All classes at KPS require a class rep by the end of Week 3, so please speak to your child’s teacher or email camille@fluidfinancegroup.com.au if you are interested.

Thank you, Camille Jeppesen (KPS Fundraising Coordinator)

Use of the School Grounds After School
13/03/2019
16:50

We are happy for students who are being directly supervised by the parents to play on playground equipment after school. Supervising other people's children, without consent from their parents, is not compliant with legal requirements. Equipment can not be used before school (except by clubs who have been licensed to use the school site for training) and the oval is out of bounds before and after school.

It has been school policy for some time for the early childhood area (enclosed area where the kindy and pre-primary classes are located) to be vacated by 3:30pm.  Likewise, now that we have OSHClub on site, it is important that we vacate the schools grounds by 3:30pm to allow the OSHClub to use the area, as they are licensed to do.

Spaces are strictly limited to 30 children and cost will be $15/child.

Please get your RSVP in ASAO as we need to let Recfishwest know that we have enough numbers to run the clinic.

RSVPs to Dave on hhmst1@westnet.com.au – first in best dressed!

DUCKs Como Bowls Club with special guest Greg Hire

15:45
Start Date: 16/10/2019
Start Time: 16:30
End Date: 16/10/2019
End Time: 21:00

DATE CHANGE: Wed 16 October, to be confirmed.

Please come along and support the next DUCKs event at the Como Bowls Club

The DUCKs are proud to host an evening with NBL Champion and former Vice Captain of the Perth Wildcats - Greg Hire

Greg's life as a young kid, by his own admission, was far from stable. His dad moved away when he was young, his mum worked long hours and was often away working for days at a time. Dabbling in drugs and alcohol and sleeping overnight in train stations and on school ovals was part of his teenage life. Fortunately for Greg, a Phys Ed teacher at high school helped to point him in the right direction.

Many years of training and persistence against adversity led to a very successful career with the Perth Wildcats.

Greg started his own charity  “A Stitch in Time” in 2014 and, along with his role as an ambassador for Perth based charity “Youth Focus”, is heavily focused on improving the mental health of Western Australian children.

Greg was named the recipient of the 2018 Western Australian of the Year Youth Award for his work with A Stitch in Time.

Please come along and listen to Greg  who will discuss with us his great work for A Stitch in Time and his efforts to raise money for youth suicide prevention. You will also get a great insight into his life juggling a young family as a professional athlete.

Greg is donating his time to come and talk to us, so please support this event if you can. If you haven’t been to a DUCKs event previously, then this would be a great start! If you have been to a DUCKS event before, please bring along someone who hasn’t!

Cost to be confirmed but expecting about $10/head to cover venue and some finger food.

Please get your RSVPs in quickly to Mike Purves at mikepurves@me.com
